University Perspective Program
A development program for CU-Boulder and
System Administration staff
The purpose of the University Perspective Program is to retain and continuously develop campus staff from all levels of the organization by:
Providing educational and transparent meetings with campus leadership that deepen a participants knowledge of university operations, while gaining perspective on the impact of their own work on the mission of the University of Colorado.
Increasing staff awareness of and fostering a deep sense of pride in the unique role each campus has in meeting the higher education needs of the State of Colorado.
Providing opportunities for participants to understand the unique dynamics of the University's most important relationships; including the City of Boulder, the Board of Regents, and the State Legislature.
Engaging staff in discussions with successful leaders who share personal experiences and advice that contribute to professional and personal growth in the areas of leadership, management, and career success.
Providing a cross-departmental network of professional peers for participants to engage with throughout their careers at the University of Colorado
The University Perspective Program is a seven-month program. The format will include meetings with campus administrators and distinguished faculty, research visits, and class time to network with the other participants in the program. Additionally, participants will meet with the Boulder City Manager, attend a legislative session at the State Capitol, meet with members of the President's executive team and visit each campus of the University of Colorado System.
The University Perspective Program is sponsored by the CU-Boulder Vice Chancellors, the Chancellor and System Administration. Participants must be nominated and the appropriate administrative areas will make the final selections. Strong consideration will be given to individuals who have demonstrated leadership skills in their current job responsibilities. The program is available to all Boulder campus and System Administration staff who have been employed at the university for at least two years and who consistently exceed performance expectations as reflected on annual performance evaluations.
Founded in 1987 and originally referred to as the University Fellows program, the University Perspective Program has an alumni list of over 400 graduates. While it is not a training class and no assurances can be made about participants' career progression, many particpants have gone on to enjoy long and successful careers at the University and have greatly valued their participation in the program throughout their career.
From the Coordinator
The goal of the University Perspective is to provide staff with a broader knowledge of the University of Colorado System and its interactions with the Board of Regents, the legislature, the community, and the State. The program continues to evolve with feedback from the participants.
The program continues to "wow" staff as they are given an opportunity to learn firsthand, through organized visits to each campus, about the individual campuses and their unique role and mission and about the legislative process by visiting the Capitol with the privilege to observe from the floor of the Senate how issues are passed and/or debated. Another important component of the program is that it provides staff an opportunity to network, share ideas, and to learn from each other.
The success of the program is dependent upon the speakers. They are the cornerstone of the program and I extend my gratitude and appreciation for their involvement with the program. I thank and acknowledge the staff at CU-Denver (downtown Denver campus and Anschutz Medical campus), UCCS, and the President's Office for their help in organizing visits to their individual campuses. The participants and I feel it is a privilege and an honor to be part of this program. I believe this program enables staff to become better ambassadors of the University of Colorado System.
Last, but not least, I thank CU-Boulder's administration and System Administration for your support of the program, your leadership, and commitment to staff development.
