Counseling Interventions
Brief Counseling Service
We offer solution-focused counseling (up to 6 sessions per year at no charge) for assistance with work-related, personal, or family problems. These sessions may be used for individual counseling, couples counseling, or counseling involving some combination of family members. For family counseling, the faculty or staff member must be present in these sessions.
Once a faculty/staff member has completed the initial assessment with an FSAP counselor, the faculty/staff member becomes a client of the FSAP department. Information revealed by an FSAP client, with an FSAP staff member, is confidential and will not become part of the individual's employment record. There are limits to confidentiality that is discussed below.
Information shared during an FSAP visit will be released to a third party only when the employee fills out a Release of Information Form.
More specifically, FSAP will not release any information identifying an individual as a client receiving, or having received, counseling services unless:
The client signs a release of information for authorizing specific information to be released to a specific person(s) for a determined purpose.
A disclosure is directed by court order
The client appears to be in immediate danger of harming him/herself or another person
Information shared with the counselor reveals concerns related to suspected/possible child and dependent elder abuse. Counselors are "forced reporters" of child and elder abuse and are required by law to report any suspected abuse.
Referrals
Some concerns will require a referral to an outside provider. The resources are within the Boulder/Denver community in order to provide appropriate referrals to employees seeking assistance beyond the scope of FSAP. Following the Initial Assessment meeting, the FSAP counselor will give you a list of providers that would be appropriate for follow up. FSAP maintains referral resources of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, as well as providers within other disciplines. The decision to accept the recommendations of the FSAP counselor remains with you.
A faculty/staff member could also call us directly to ask for referrals for themselves or for others without a formal assessment. Some examples of referrals are community resources, hospice, eldercare, shelters etc…
FSAP Resource Directory is a resource, not an endorsement of providers. In addition to this resource list, you may wish to consult other resources including your doctor or other trusted professionals, your state's psychological or psychiatric association, or your state chapter of the alliance for the mentally ill. Inquire into the credentials of any practitioner before choosing a therapist.
